Yeah, do let me clarify that...

I only think it's ethical if the person is made aware that they will be billed monthly before you bill them for the first item.

So if you are trying to sell me item A for 7.99 but that in 30 days if I don't cancel I will also be billed 19.95 for product b (or the continued use of product A) then you better tell me upfront.

Rule of thumb... Treat your customers (and even those who are just your fans) like you would want to be treated.

No monkey business!

You do everything upfront...

I'm as real and upfront as I can be, and that always reflects in my marketing.

Clear on that now? :)

Hello Liz,
I agree that these marketing systems are not unethical if used ethically. I am not sure that I agree that forced continuity is ethiical though. I think it's like you said, that it can be used ethically if a person is made aware that they are also getting and paying for something else, BUT.....

only if the person is made aware that they will be billed for something else, BEFORE you actually bill them for the initial product or service that they are interested in.

If a person pays you for item A, and then you bill them for something else, and THEN tell them that they will be billed an additional amount that they never agress to, then no, that is not ethical, and saying that you made them aware of this after the fact does not excuse this kind of deception.

If you sell someone item A, then tell them that they will be billed for something else BEFORE you accept payment for item A, and let that customer decide for themselves if they then want to pay for item A, or not, then that is the ethical way to do it.

Simply saying that you made someone aware of an additional purchase does not automatically make the 'forced continuity' marketing method acceptable. You should defenitaly make a potential customer aware of any additional purchase requirements, but it's not that you made a potential buyer aware, that matters so much, as it is WHEN you make them aware.

Making someone aware of this doesn't cut it if you accept and receive that person's payment before you make him or her aware of this particular marketing process.

Perry G.
Unless I missed something in the video, then I don't think you said which one you thought was okay or if you thought both ways were okay,.

Liz,

Your explanation is very clear. You are right that some of the "big dogs" have masses of folks working in the background.

I'm definitely going to check out Jordan's product. You have also showed another great form of marketing in this blog post. Using blogs to drive traffic to your affiliate products is an incredible way to make money online.

Again, thanks for your input into the "slick marketing" tricks :-)

Liz, you were one of my first mentors, and still one of my favs. You always tell it straight, and I've always valued your advise. But forced continuity? Whoo Hoo! Jump back, Loretta.

Actually, you are correct. Done right and upfront, it's a great marketing tactic. In fact. the Mr. Mike you mentioned did it sort of behind the scenes (not upfront) his first time around for Marketing DotCom newsletter, he was outed so to speak, and rushed to make it a lot more upfront. Both Stompernet and Yanik Silver have been upfront, very much so, in their launches. And, it does work. So thanks for making all this a lot more clearer and understandable.
